New Boyne Valley Tourism APP

Provides easy access to tourist information for visitors

On Thursday 7th April the new Boyne Valley Tourism APP was launched at the Boyne Valley Tourism AGM in Dunboyne Castle Hotel.  Packed with information, the APP is FREE to download to iphone and android devices and provides tourists with all the relevant facts to enable them plan their trip to the Boyne Valley.  Some of the many features include a ‘What’s on’ Calendar and a ‘My Itinerary’ section that gives suggested 3 or 5 day itineraries for those planning a ‘Family Fun Holiday’; or a ‘Heritage and Culture’ experience; Those wanting to follow in the footsteps of St. Patrick can choose from the ‘Religion and Pilgrimage’ trips; With the Boyne Valley being synonymous with excellent golfing there is also a 3 day itinerary for the ‘Golf and Leisure’ enthusiast.  As the APP is GPS enabled it allows the user to access information on accommodation and attractions close to where you are actually standing at any given time, and to make it even easier for the user they can get directions to a location, e.g. a hotel or attraction.     The Boyne Valley Tourism APP works offline and there are no data or roaming charges.

The project was driven by the Cultural Tourism Group who oversaw the development of the official Boyne Valley Tourism App. With information very accessible and straightforward, along with geo fencing technology, the App enables events in the local area to be highlighted to the visitor. Additionally, tourist providers can upload their own information and special offers.

The launch page of the Boyne Valley Tourism App has four main sections: (1)  ‘Boyne Valley’, a comprehensive section on what there is available in the area e.g. the Boyne Valley Drive, Historic Sites, Historic Trails, Myths & Legends, Towns and finally a Photo Gallery  with images from the Boyne Valley, as they say – a picture paints a thousand words. (2)  A very useful ‘What’s On’ section with a calendar and list of what there is to do in the Boyne Valley, the user can choose any preferred date and the Boyne Valley Tourism App will list what is on in the Boyne Valley on that date. (3) In the ‘Plan Your Visit’ element of the App the user can choose from four categories, Food and Drink, Places to Stay, Things to Do and Tourist Information Centres.  In each of the headings the App provides a number of options, e.g. in the ‘Food & Drink’ section you can filter the choices by location, in an A-Z format or those establishments that have deals or special offers.  The Boyne Valley Tourism App will tell you how far you are away from the different locations by car or on foot. (4) The ‘My Itinerary’ section provides pre-planned itinerary options for 3 and 5 day stays in the Boyne Valley  with the App planning your stay each day giving recommendations for morning activities, where to lunch, what to do in the afternoon, suggestions as to where to have dinner and evening entertainment options.

Noel French, Chairman of Meath Tourism Ltd said, “Taking into account that a large percentage of tourists use digital tools in search of the best experience before, during and after travelling, and that booking through mobile devices has increased; the launch of the official Boyne Valley Tourism App is very timely.  Whether you are a tourist or a local, you will find the App has a wealth of information that will help you get the most from your visit to the Boyne Valley”

This project is part financed by the European Union’s INTERREG IVA cross border programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body.  The remainder of the funding was provided by Meath County Council.
