The National Sand Castle and Sand Sculpturing Festival took place June 28th Bettystown Co Meath. With the Unitas Beach Cricket the day before it was great once again to have a whole weekend on the beach.

All Prizes for Sandcastles and Sculpturing were presented by Dick O'Reilly's grandson Ruari McInerney, from Clare. Ruari said " I am delighterd to be here to present the winners of the Sandcastle competition with their prizes. This competition was started by my Grandad Dick O'Reilly 13 years a go from small beginnings and is now firmly on the map as a national festival. For Dick this was all about having a fun family day out and he was delighted with the addition of other activities such as cricket to the day's event." Ruari went on to thank the committee for all the hard work they had put into this years event and especially thanked Dick's close friend Martina Maguire who has "Ensured that Dick's vision is carried on " He added. Ruari also thanked all the sponsors. Each year a cup is presented to the overall winner of the sandcastles. This year Ruari presented the Dick O'Reilly Perpetual Cup to the Cassidy Family from Bettystown as the overall winner of the Sandcastles Competition 2015.

Martina Maguire, spokesperson for the group extended a special word of thanks to all the judges for each category in the sandcastles and the judges for both the Junior and Senior Sand Sculpturing competitions.

This year was the third year that there was two categories in the Sculpturing - Junior and Senior.

The Junior winners were as follows:

1st Ross, Rory and Mark Tolan Bettystown - 2nd Place Lisa Jean and Greg O'Reilly Mullingar - 3rd Place - Ellen Harbison Laytown

The Senior winners

1st Place Cill, Zoe, Johnboy and Shelley "There was an Old Woman" - 2nd Place Conor Duff - "Piano Man" - 3rd Place - Elina and Edgar - "Whale"

"As with each year we could not do this event without the support of the members of Meath County Council", said Martina "Thank you to John Maguire from Mornington and Rory McInerney from Clare for marking out all the plots and especially Thea Allen for feeding us". Martina finished by thanking all the competitors and spectators for both days and assured that they would be back again next year.
