It was a great achievement to be a finalist once again in this very prestigious RDS National Craft Awards but at the prize awards ceremony in the RDS the name Seamus Cassidy was called out for 2 separate awards. The work entitled "Orbital" won 1st Prize and RDS Medal in the Woodturning craft category and the Irish Woodturners Guild Award with a €500 prize. This brings to 13 the total number of RDS awards received by Seamus to date.
This year's winning entry is a trio of contemporary hollow forms in bleached ash and contrasting rich burr elm and acrylic, mounted on a glass base. The3 vessels are in 15% incremental proportions and the entirety imparts a simple visual elegance.
The award winning entries were exhibited during the RDS Horse Show and will now travel to The Hunt Museum in Limerick, for the month of September, and then to the National Crafts & Design Fair in the RDS in December.
Multi-award winning woodturner, Seamus is renowned for his unique style and contemporary designs which are precision crafted to very exacting standards. He is based just a few miles from Slane and also the Newgrange Interpretative Centre in Co. Meath and has converted an old carthouse into an atmospheric studio and gallery. Working mainly to commission, he designs many presentation pieces for the corporate sector as well as covering production, functional and one-off artistic works which showcase his exquisite workmanship and attention to detail. As Seamus feels very passionate about woodturning, he knows that in order to keep this skill alive, it must be transferred on to younger generations. This is why he provides classes in his studio where is involved in teaching woodturning to young and old alike, and doing his best to ensure that others get the same enjoyment as he does from this wonderful craft.
