Horse Racing has taken place at Navan's “Royal County” Proudstown site since the 1920's. Set in 181 acres, the track is highly respected by owners and trainers who recognise that it's stiff uphill finish is a true test of their horse’s fitness and stamina. Many jockeys test the mettle of their horses ahead of premium British races at this track, as the hurdling events are famously competitive. Multiple future winners of Grade One events have cut their teeth at Navan Racecourse.
This year as well as playing host to the GrB Ladbrokes Troytown Chase and Winter Ladies Day, on Sunday 21st November they will also be celebrating Navan Racecourse's 100th Birthday.
After a turbulent 2 years when Covid restrictions forced the course to close and then restrict numbers in attendance, Navan Racecourse is still holding its own as one of the most popular venues for racegoers. Being the only course in Ireland where spectators have a clear view of the whole track - and all the runners - for the duration of each event, its easy to see why.
As well as their celebrations on the 21st of November, Navan Racecourse have also asked members of the public to send them birthday greetings using #Navan100. They have also asked anyone with pictures from races down through the years to send them to firstname.lastname@example.org. Check out the video below on the very first day back in 1921 of Navan Racecourse.
