2025 National Heritage Week August 16th - 24th events click
The theme of Heritage Week 2025 is “Exploring Our Foundations” and our waterways are an important part of the history of our island.
National Heritage Week is a nine-day celebration of Ireland’s natural, built and cultural heritage. The main aim of the week is to promote awareness of our heritage, thereby encouraging its conservation and preservation. It is part of European Heritage Days, a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Union.
Since the Heritage Council assumed responsibility for National Heritage Week in 2005, it has grown from a small 500 event to almost 2,000 events in 2023. The Heritage Council assumed the role of coordinator of National Heritage Week from the Department of the Environment, Heritage & Local Government. Since then the week has grown into a highly successful programme.
