Schola Hyberniae propose a musical hour inspired by the history of the Boyne Valley. This interactive performance will feature chants about light and ancient sung texts dedicated to Saint Patrick and Saint Brigid, evoking a strong sense of place and mysticism which connects contemporary audiences with our ancestral heritage.
The programme will consist of songs from our Irish tradition, medieval chant, and early polyphony. This includes a special focus on ancient Irish manuscripts. The sung pieces will be informed by an introduction to the music and texts, their connection to our local heritage, and the vocal techniques essential for their performance: unified sound, mutual listening, and intertwining vocal lines. This collaborative approach fosters a deeper connection between the audience and the music, and provides context for celebrating the Solstice themes of light, hope, and connection. The audience will also be invited to join in singing through the use of vocal drones, which feature in both our Irish song tradition and medieval chant.
Schola Hyberniae is a vocal ensemble comprised of 6 to 8 female voices led by Dr Giovanna Feeley, with members drawn from south-east Meath. Our work focuses on the performance of medieval music and chant from early Irish manuscripts, reviving music that has remained unheard for centuries, and sharing this rich heritage with the public. We have been invited to perform nationally and internationally at symposia, conferences, festivals, liturgies, and recitals. Notable highlights include representing Ireland as part of the Bram Stoker Festival at Expo2025, Osaka, Japan, and a performance at Ireland House, Tokyo in October 2025.
