A Three Day Halloween Itinerary for the Boyne Valley

Date: 20/10/2026

Halloween has deep roots in the Boyne Valley, where ancient traditions, Celtic mythology and the stories of Samhain have been passed down through generations. Every October, this rich heritage comes to life through The Spirits of Meath Festival, Púca Festival, the Lú Festival of Light and Samhain Festival of Food and Culture bringing music, folklore, fire and spectacular performances to the Boyne Valley.

From Thursday 29th October to Sunday 1st November 2026, the Boyne Valley will once again become a focal point for Halloween celebrations, with events and experiences for visitors of all ages. Whether you're planning a weekend away with friends, a family trip or a few days exploring Ireland's Ancient East, there's plenty to fill your itinerary

Here's how to spend three days enjoying Halloween in the Boyne Valley, with Púca Festival at the heart of your plans.

Day One: Friday 30th October

Trim

Explore Trim and Its Medieval Heritage

Start your weekend in Trim, one of the Boyne Valley's most historic towns. Before the Halloween festivities get underway, take some time to explore the town's medieval streets and impressive landmarks.

Trim Castle is the town's most recognisable feature and a great place to begin. Standing proudly beside the River Boyne, it is the largest Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland and has a fascinating history stretching back to the 12th century. You can admire the castle from the surrounding grounds, enjoy a walk along the river or take in the views as you explore the town.

Trim is also an ideal base for discovering the wider Boyne Valley, with historic sites, scenic walks and welcoming local businesses all within easy reach.

Experience Púca Festival 2026

Puca Festival

The main event begins with Púca Festival, running from 29th October to 1st November 2026. Trim and Athboy will once again transform into vibrant hubs of celebration, welcoming visitors from near and far for a festival inspired by the origins of Halloween.

Púca brings together Irish music, folklore, fire performances, storytelling and entertainment, celebrating the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain and the traditions that helped shape Halloween as we know it today.

Across the festival weekend, visitors can expect a lively atmosphere throughout both towns, with performances and celebrations drawing on the mythology, music and cultural heritage of the Boyne Valley.

Make time to explore the festival programme before travelling so you can plan your day around the events that interest you most. With four days of celebrations, there is plenty to discover.

Evening: Experience the Púca Procession in Trim

As evening approaches, return to Trim for one of the most atmospheric parts of the Halloween weekend.

Púca Festival will continue to bring the town to life with music, performances, folklore and fire, creating a celebration that draws on the ancient traditions of Samhain. The festival's procession is a particular highlight, bringing colour, spectacle and a sense of occasion to the streets.

Find a suitable spot along the route, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the experience as the procession passes through the town. If you're planning to watch from near McCormack's, its location beside Trim Castle and directly along the procession route makes it a handy meeting point.

Be sure to check the official Púca Festival programme for the confirmed procession time, route and any access arrangements before heading into town. Afterwards, stay in Trim to enjoy the festival atmosphere, catch up with friends and make the most of Halloween night in the Boyne Valley.

Day Two: Saturday 31st October

Saturday is Halloween itself, making it the perfect day to explore the traditions behind the celebrations. From the mythology of ancient Ireland to contemporary art and the spectacle of Púca Festival, there are plenty of ways to experience the day.

Morning: Discover the Boyne Valley's Halloween Heritage

Hill of Ward

Start the morning with a relaxed breakfast before exploring more of Trim or venturing into the surrounding countryside.

The Boyne Valley is particularly significant at Halloween because of its connections to ancient Celtic traditions. Samhain marked the transition from the lighter half of the year into winter, and was traditionally associated with gatherings, folklore and the belief that the boundary between the human world and the supernatural was thinner at this time of year.

If you have time, use the morning to visit some of the region's historic sites or enjoy a scenic walk before heading to Athboy for an afternoon of folklore and storytelling.

Afternoon: Tlachtga Abhaile – Home of Halloween Tour, Athboy

Tlachtga

For a deeper understanding of the origins of Halloween, make your way to Athboy for the Tlachtga Abhaile – Home of Halloween Tour on Saturday 31st October.

Professional tour guide and actor Fiona Dalton brings the local goddess of Samhain to life in an original living-history experience. During this one-hour guided walk around Athboy's Fairgreen, you'll discover the story of how Halloween began and learn about Tlachtga's place in Celtic mythology.

The tour offers a fascinating connection between the modern Halloween celebrations and the ancient traditions of the Boyne Valley. Rather than simply hearing about the region's past, visitors have the opportunity to experience its mythology through storytelling and performance.

Event details:

  • Date: Saturday 31st October 2026
  • Times: 2pm and 4pm
  • Meeting point: Tlachtga Statue, Fairgreen, Athboy
  • Duration: One hour
  • Tickets: €15

This is an excellent choice for anyone interested in Irish mythology, local history and the stories behind the Halloween season. As spaces and ticket availability may vary, check the event information before travelling.
