Spirits of Meath Festival 2026

Date: 06/10/2026

2nd October – 8th November 2026

Halloween in the Boyne Valley is more than a single night of dressing up, pumpkins and trick or treating. This is the land where the ancient traditions of Samhain have been celebrated for thousands of years, and every autumn the region embraces its reputation as the Home of Halloween with a season of family fun, folklore, food, festivals and plenty of frights.

From 2nd October to 8th November, the Spirits of Meath Festival returns for 2026, bringing Halloween to life right across County Meath. The programme offers something for all ages, with activities ranging from pumpkin patches and family adventures to haunted trails, immersive experiences and after-dark scares.

Fun by Day

Navan Adventure Centre

The best thing about Halloween in the Boyne Valley is that the fun starts long before the sun goes down.

During the day, families can get into the Halloween spirit with pumpkin picking, pumpkin hunts, monster-themed activities, farm experiences and plenty of opportunities to get outdoors and enjoy the autumn countryside.

Causey Farm's Halloween programme is a major part of the festivities, with daytime activities including Pooka Spooka, while venues around Meath offer their own take on the season. There are pumpkin festivals, Halloween activities at Navan Adventure Centre and family events at Kilbrew, while the wider Boyne Valley also has seasonal experiences to discover.

For those looking for something a little different, there are murder mystery trails and Halloween-themed experiences that combine the region's history and landscape with a little mystery. And with so many activities taking place across October, you can build a Halloween break around the experiences that suit you.

The result is a Halloween that doesn't have to be all about scares. There is plenty of family-friendly fun to be had before the costumes come out and the sun goes down.

Fright by Night

Spirits of Meath

Then, as darkness falls, things take a decidedly different turn.

The Fright by Night programme brings some of the more terrifying experiences of Spirits of Meath to life. Causey Farm's FARMPHOBIA throughout October, while After Dark at Kilbrew offers another chance to test your nerves after sunset.

There are also Halloween night-time experiences around the county, giving visitors the chance to swap pumpkin patches and family activities for haunted attractions, darkness and plenty of unexpected scares.

For those who enjoy their Halloween with a little more adrenaline, the later October dates are the perfect time to visit. As Halloween approaches, the atmosphere across Meath builds, with the final week bringing the festival season to its spooky peak.

And you don't necessarily have to stop at Halloween night itself. The Spirits of Meath Festival runs right through to 8th November, giving visitors plenty of opportunities to experience the season.

The Home of Halloween

Tlachtga

Of course, there is a reason Halloween feels particularly at home here.

The Boyne Valley is closely associated with Samhain, the ancient Irish festival that marked the end of the harvest and the transition towards winter. According to local folklore, Samhain originated in the Boyne Valley more than 2,000 years ago.

One of the most important places connected with these traditions is the Hill of Tlachtga, now known as the Hill of Ward, just outside Athboy. According to the writings of 17th-century historian Geoffrey Keating, a Samhain fire festival was held here, with people gathering for feasting and ceremonies as winter approached.

Archaeological research also suggests that Tlachtga was used for feasting and ceremonial activity from the late Bronze Age through to the early medieval period.

That history gives Halloween in the Boyne Valley a sense of place that goes far beyond modern decorations and costumes. The landscape itself is part of the story. From ancient hills and passage tombs to legendary sites such as the Hill of Tara, this is a region where mythology, history and the natural landscape have been intertwined for generations.

So when the evenings grow darker and the stories of spirits and otherworldly creatures begin to emerge, you're celebrating Halloween in a place with a very long relationship with the season.
